Watch Batteries
Button Cells are disposable watch batteries that should always be recycled, as they contain hazardous materials such as Silver Oxide, Zinc, Mercury and Lithium.
These batteries are either High Drain (for watches that have backlit displays and use up more power) or Low Drain categories (normal watches that use power more slowly). They can also vary in size and voltage. Every manufacturer classifies their batteries differently though, so it’s best to do your research if you want to buy and fit a battery yourself.
Fitting your own watch battery can be fairly easy on some types of watches, but in the vast majority of cases it’s easier getting it done professionally. There are watch repairers and jewellers on every high street, though market stalls and places like shoe repairers often offer these services at cheaper prices. If you own an expensive watch though, it’s always best to send it to the manufacturer or an approved agent, as sending it elsewhere could invalidate your warranty.
Sometimes, a watch may have to be sent off to have a battery fitted, and it may actually be more cost effective to buy a brand new watch instead, which is a good excuse to go shopping!
